Waste In My Community
Currently 1,27,486 tonnes of municipal waste is being generated per day, due to various household activities, commercial and industrial activities. Nowadays, e-wastes and nuclear wastes are increasing due to faster growing of electronics usage and nuclear experiments. There is a rapid growth of population in India which leads to depletion of our natural resources. In India there are over 1.5 million scavengers ( waste collectors ). Only about 43 million tonnes of waste is collected , 11.9 million ton is treated , around 31 million ton is just dumped in landfills sites. 7.90 million ton is hazardous waste.
Types of Wastes:
1. Liquid waste
2. Solid waste
3. Organic waste
4. Recyclable waste
5. Hazardous waste
In addition to this there are many other types of wastes like , Biomedical waste , e-waste , nuclear waste which are increasing in multiple folds, in which many are non- biodegradable causing pollution and is hazardous to human and animals health. It leads to changes in our environment. The Bio- medical wastes are about 0.17 million tonnes and e-wastes are around 15 lakh tonnes. India already has an ideal system of waste recycling and separation.

In managing waste there are many people associated , but at the lowest level staff or employees play a major role.
In a community level
2. Health Inspector
3. Sanitary Inspector
6. Truck drivers
7. City Beautifiers (waste collectors)
8. Local people or citizens
The Central and State Boards are creating awareness and implementing relevant Acts and Rules for local bodies to take correct measures in treatment and disposal of waste in their communities.
Steps in segregation of waste :
4. Recovery and Reuse
5. Marketing and Trading.
Residents line up and handover thier trash containers to the waste collectors. The waste collection vehicle often take waste to a transfer station where it will be loaded up into a larger vehicle and sent to landfill or waste treatment.
Unfollowing of rules by citizens :
Due to large diversity of material that compose this waste the technological, economical and environmental policies alternative have caused changes in waste management practice, which complicates the scenario. Lack of infrastructure for collection , transportation, treatment and disposal of solid waste , insufficient financial resources, technical expertise has made the situation exasperating due to which several problems related to environment and health are increasing. Residents do not segregate the dry and wet waste it affects the processing of managing waste. Due to this the waste collectors have to segregate all the waste . Residents throw thrash, spill doma on street, throw waste on foot paths and corners, dump garbage at improper places, this is one of the most observed perspectives in our city areas.
Problems faced by City Beautifiers (Waste Collectors):
Waste collecting is a dangerous job than police work. Because even in this Covid-19 situation when the whole world is fear and anxiety. They put their lives in danger they also act frontline warriors. Hazards include broken glasses, medical wastes-syringes, asbestos, dog attacks, pests, inhaling dust, smoke and chemical fumes, even the unpleasant smells make the waste collectors physically feel sick.
Waste Handling infections:
*Skin and blood infections-from direct contact with waste and from infected wounds.
*Eye and Respiratory infections from exposure to infected dust.
*Infections from bites of animals feeding on waste.
*Intestinal infections that are transmitted by flies feeding on waste.
*Carry your own cloth or jute bag when you go out for shopping.
*Segregate the waste in your house keep two garbage bins and see to it that biodegradable and non biodegradable is put in separate bins and disposed off separately.
*Dig a compost pit in your own house garden and put all biodegradable waste into it.
* When you go out try not to throw paper and other wrappings here and there , make sure you throw it in the dustbin.
*Things you can reuse or recycle; old paper’s, books, cards, cardboard boxes, plastic boxes, bags, sheets, covers, bottles, plates, cups and bowls.
