Theme -Waste management .
sub theme –waste in my community.
Waste management is the key to a cleaner environment. But people in today’s world don’t consider it as much .They wish for a beautiful world but never do the job. ‘Hard work is the key to success’. This proverb plays an important role here. The people in today’s generation find it as a issue to clean their own mess. Waste management starts from one’s household .It includes smaller tasks such as: Separating dry from wet waste, composting your own kitchen waste , avoiding plastics etc.., Proper management of waste is important for building a sustainable environment.
There are innumerable number of waste management projects that are established to make this world a better place to live in . For example : the waste management project designed at Green Channel in Bangladesh aims to put in force sustainable systems of waste collection , segregation and treatment along with a controlled way of reducing waste across the country .It is showed that India generates about 62 million tonnes of waste annually and it also has been predicted that this will reach to 165 million tones by 2030, which to be noted is not a lot of time . It is in our hands to reduce the amount of waste. Some of the waste management projects in India are : KOZHIKODE-100 TPD. Compost plant, Biomethanation .C and D facility.
Waste management is not only important for the cleanliness of the surrounding but also to maintain the health conditions of the citizens .It needs to be protected because the entire population’s health and protection depend on it .The 3 r’s namely : reduce , reuse and recycle.
“It makes a big difference to recycle . It makes a big difference to use recycled products .It makes a big difference to reuse things , to not use paper cup and each time you do , that’s a victory .” –Emily Deschnel.
The process of REDUCE begins with an examination of what you are using , and what it is used for. Some things to reduce waste are : Print on both sides of the paper to reduce paper wastage, use refillable pens instead of buying too many ,use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins.
REUSE- this can be done with a little bit of creativity and mindfulness . This saves us from money wastage. For example : old newspapers can be used in wrapping up things when you plan to move our house, old jeans or any clothes can be turned into bags or tote-bags with help of tutorials available on the internet.
The 3rd r RECYCLE – it means that something will be transformed into a raw material that can be shaped into a new item. One needs to learn as to what products can be recycled and what cannot.
Buy products from the market that are environment friendly and that are made up of recyclable materials . Recycling can become economically viable only if the recycled product is put to use.
There are actually different types of waste namely- solid waste, animal feces, wastewater ,industrial waste and agricultural waste. And waste management is the strategy to prevent, monitor, handle and treat these wastes.
There are different types of methods in waste management namely : Landfilling, incineration and recycling.
The World Health Organization (WHO)has stated that improper disposal of medical waste can cause the following diseases.
1. Parasitic Infections
2. Lung Infections
3. Skin Infections etc..,
The negative effects of improper waste management are – Water Pollution , Soil contamination and Air pollution. It also gives rise to disease carrying pests.
Some waste will eventually rot, but not all ,and in the process, it may smell, or generate methane gas which is explosive and contributes to the greenhouse effect. Leachate produced as waste decomposes may cause pollution . Badly managed landfill sites may attract vermin or cause litter. This is how waste affects the community. If your community does not have a reliable waste collection service , you can organize one by seeking the help of the local government.
Waste collectors are at risk for all the health problems that come with waste. To prevent harm, waste collectors need training in how to protect themselves from such health issues.
Resource Recovery Centre
A resource recovery centre is a place where reusable and recyclable materials are collected for safe disposal of waste . It can also be a place where the community can compost and start gardening works and also make new products from old materials. Several communities in the Philippines have resource recovery centres set up by local governments and an organization called –MOTHER EARTH FOUNDATION. These resource recovery centres have inspired community solid waste programs throughout the country, and have helped change the entire system of waste management.
Therefore I consider that waste can be managed by simpler techniques only when the whole community comes together. If we keep our work consistent we can surely make this world a better place to in .It always starts from one’s household and then grows wider into a community and more wider into a country. It all depends by our own interest towards our mother earth. We should consider it as our duty to make our place clean and beautiful. So come lets all put our hands together and make our beautiful nature even more beautiful by getting committed to our duties and performing them whole heartedly .
