Environment is an important issue. It matters a lot because, Earth is the only home that humans have. We depend on Earth for air, food and other needs. Now-a-days we can see Environmental threats like climate change, Air pollution, water pollution, Deforestation, Soil degradation, Drainage of natural resources, water crises, global warming, ozone layer depletion etc.
My Waste My Responsibility:
India’s urban population a 429 million citizens produce whooping 62 million tonnes of garbage every year. Out of this, 5.6 million tonnes is biomedical waste, 790 million tonnes is hazardous waste, And 15 lakh tonnes is e-waste.
It has been greatest challenge in India for waste management because of rapid population growth which is in turn leading to depletion a natural resources and contributing to environmental pollution. There are 5 types of wastes. Namely- liquid waste, solid rubbish organic waste and hazardous waste. It’s our responsibility to segregate the waste we produce into these different types and ensure proper waste removal.
1) Liquid waste :
Some common examples are household waste water, human and animal excreta, cooking oil, fats and grease. Source can also be the Industries.Which let the waste water into water bodies & pollute it.
Solution : 1.Educate employees about toxic and non-toxic liquids.
2. In case liquid is non-hazardous, using de-watering method in which liquid waste is pumped into huge bag and water is removed, leaving behind only solid waste. which is later disposed in a landfill.
3. In case of hazardous liquid waste, “deep well injection” which means pumping liquid waste through steel casing into porous layers of sandstone OR limestone. High pressure is applied to force liquid into pores where it can be permanently stored.
2) Solid Rubbish:
Any garbage or sludge from commercial, industrial , mining, agricultural and community activities. The most effective way of managing solid rubbish is “Sanitary landfilling of solid wastes”.
• It is simple, cheap and effective.
• 3-5 meter deep trench is excavated
•The waste is laid in layers.
•Layers are compacted with some mechanical equipment and covered with Earth, leveled and compacted.
• The fill settles with time.
•Microorganisms act on organic matter and degrade them.It is similar to composting.
• Some organic matter get converted into water soluble organics.
• Some diffuse through soil and some into the atmosphere.
3) Recyclable Rubbish :
Rigid plastics and bottles, cardboard , paper, glass etc. These are the waste materials which can be recycled into new materials.
Recycling such waste in an effective manner leads to reduce energy consumption, reduce pollution of water and land fills.
4) organic waste:
They are also called as biodegradable waste. Some of the examples for organic waste are food waste, paper waste, human waste , sewage, slaughter house waste etc.
It is managed by composting. Here organisms present organic matter and sail decompose the organic material
5) Hazardous waste.
The waste material that affects human health and environment. Example : Car Wax, brake fluid, gasoline , kerosene, solvent based paints, pesticides , batteries (that of phone, car etc) and spa bath chemicals.
It’s our responsibility to either reduce quantity of waste at it’s Source or to recycle them and in effective safely manner. But there is always a need for treatment, Storage I disposal of hazardous waste. These wastes can be treated by ion exchange, oxidation -reduction method, incineration etc. which not only detoxify the organic wastes but also destroys them. other wastes which cannot be treated by this method are treated by land disposal method. There are 2 types: land filling and underground injection.
If both doesn’t work go for off site solution, which means complete removal of waste material from site and transport it to another location for treatment and proper disposal.
We can save our Earth only if we follow these 5 R’s of waste management: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover and Residual management. we must have knowledge of what can be recycled and what not. Be Eco-friendly, plant more trees, conserve water and electricity. Use Natural resources judiciously.
We are responsible and when we become aware of this fact and take initiative to make some changes in our surroundings, Being motivated ourselves and inspiring others. Until then nothing is going to change. Let’s join our hands together and take individual responsibility and make this Earth a better place to live.
