What if this world was a beautiful place with oceans so clear that you could see the ocean floor with naked eyes, the sky so pure that u could see stars during the day and the land so clean that anyone be mesmerised by the natural beauty and amazing creations of men over the years. However , the fact is we live in a place where mountains of waste can be seen dumped on land ,the air is unsafe to breathe and water bodies so full of waste that we see discarded items floating
in them instead of fish.
Over the years ,there has been a tremendous increase in modernization which has lead to escalation in production and consumption thereby contributing to waste generation on even larger scales . Study shows that every year about ten billion tonnes of wate is being generated which includes a massive 50 million tonnes of E-waste and around 7.2 million tonnes of food . Meanwhile one in six people across the globe face scarcity of food . In fact , India contributes more than ten percent to the global waste annually ,major contributor being plastic waste which has been produced on a scale as large as seven million metric tonnes per year and the figures are increasing like never before .
In recent times ,waste accumulation has been a serious issue to deal with. It is estimated that over a million plastic bottles are bought per minute, most of which ends up in the ocean adversely affecting marine life. People living in slum areas or near dumpyards are particularly exposed to the harmful effects of waste accumulation.
We are the owners of the waste we produce . Every person is liable to seek proper disposal of the waste generated by him. It is estimated that an individual produces 5 kgs of waste per week on an average and this sums up to 260 kgs of waste per year. On the other hand it is shocking to note that a major part of waste is not recycled and arbitrarily dumped on land or in the sea. Its high time that we realise the impact of waste accumulation and its adverse effects . This global issue can only be solved if every individual considers it as his responsibility to reduce, reuse and recycle waste .
Reducing the amount of waste generation simply means using resources in a more sensitive way . Waste is not necessarily something which goes in the trash but also the frivolous usage of fans , coolers ,lights or water leads to waste generation. Simple actions like turning off lights and fans when not needed, using just sufficient amounts of water while bathing ,brushing, washing clothes ,gardening and having just the right amount of food on one’s plate can play a humongous role in reducing the amount of waste being produced. We should carry metal bottles while travelling to avoid the purchase of plastic ones. Measures such as using clay instead of POP to create idols for festivals , distributing leftover food from hotels among the poor and using car pooling to reach schools and offices can play a great role to reduce waste. A great way to reduce plastic pollution is by reducing its consumption which will indirectly bring down its production. We should adhere to using gunny bags, jute bags or cloth bags instead of plastic ones and replace plastic containers by steel ones to create the change.
Reusing implies using used items again ,probably for some other purpose. Using old clothes as rags instead of throwing them away ,using plastic bottles instead of pots to plant trees in ,using electronic gadgets as long as they are not in workable condition instead of frequently switching devices for example smartphones, reusing newspapers or cardboard boxes to make home decor items, if followed by every individual can bring about a revolution in waste management.
Recycling of waste refers to converting waste into reusable material. Ways to recycle waste include composting of biodegradable waste like food and dried leaves to convert it into manure and using pencil made of recycled waste items. It is even possible to build a complete house using recycled waste. What an amazing alternative that would be!
We own the waste we produce thus the responsibility to look after its proper disposal and reuse it lies on our shoulders . We shall all strive to make immense contribution to help in waste management in every way possible to address this alarming concern. By making our contribution, we are not only helping the government but also ourselves to make the world a better place , because “We are the creators of the world we live in” . So let us make incredible contributions in every way possible to make it as beautiful as it ever could be.
