MY WASTE – MY RESPONSIBILITY
Nature sets a sky aflame or
magically transforms landscape into a snow white wonderland
It can paint a rainbow in the sky and
a beautiful autumn colour on trees.
Nature makes grass glow with soft sunlight falling on it
makes the sea sparkle a dazzling sliver
Nature, Oh! How miraculous
No matter how many times I look at it
Something is always different .
The Environment encompassing all the living species, natural resources, climate, weather that affect the very survival of humans is a gift which indeed is our duty to save and protect. Human impact which includes overpopulation, pollution, burning fuels, deforestation, dumping garbage, throwing waste have triggered the climate change, eroding soil and polluting the air and water we use. Waste or unwanted materials such as waste created in factories, schools, colleges, shops, offices, home as well as agricultural waste all have contaminated the environment.
It is the duty of mankind to cleanse this environment and protect it from hazardous or toxic waste. No matter how many steps be taken up by different organizations the onus definitely lies on every human being to think and move towards creating a green ,clean ,improved and fresh environment. Before we go ahead with the disposal of waste, waste segregation is also a very important task as this will help in understanding and finding out innovative and effective waste disposal solution.
Let us look at the various ways of disposing and recycling of waste.
Land fills – Garbage dumped in large pits dug into the ground leads to decomposing of the waste which helps to eliminate the odour. This process takes many years and is a regular method used to decompose waste. This method helps in clearing large amount of garbage thrown on land.
The 3R’S – Reduce, Recycle, Reuse are the key words of 20th century.
The usage of plastic containers at home, shops, restaurants should be reduced. As we all know 1 gm of plastic takes more than 450 years to get completely degraded. Package free stores should be encouraged where customers bring their own containers bags, to carry back things after shopping.
It means recycling of unused things, otherwise making it into useful resource. Some of the methods are discussed here –
• Composting-The organic waste is converted into fertilizers thus increasing the fertility of soil. Composting can be done by kitchen domestic waste at home and organic vegetables can be grown.
• Recycled paper/Plastic Roofs:- Fast food restaurants, coffee shop, retail stores roofs can be made by their own used paper or plastic (waste)
• Recycling of plastic to build road that lasts long especially during harsh weather conditions.
• Glass Recycling:- Broken/unused glass pieces can be made into polymeric glass which is as hard as a stone and can be used for kitchen tiles, floor tiles.
• The organic waste in the Sewage System can be converted into energy. Vegetable waste, human waste; all stinking gargage can be converted in energy.
Sweden is the best example which uses all its trash into energy. Sweden has been able to recycle its waste to get energy so efficiently that sometimes Sweden has to import thrash from other countries in their recycle plant.
Another newer approach to bring back healthy soil to ecosystem is Recompose.
Human dead body can be converted with the help of plant material into nutrient-dense soil. The beneficial microbes do natural organic reduction of the dead body of human thus allowing us to give back to the earth a nutrient rich soil.As we know dead body of humans when buried takes a long time to decompose and also releases a lot of Carbon-di-oxide. Hence recompose is a unique process of giving back the vital soil to the ecosystem.
Electronic Waste needs to be recycled by not just dumping it in landfills as the mercury, lead and other chemicals present in it will make their way into the water bodies. So, proper e-disposal plants should be taken into consideration while disposing e-waste/recycling e-waste.
Setting up of Recycling plants in every district would help dispose off the waste immediately. Government or any other organization cannot be solely responsible for waste management but each individual should begin at home.
Every human being should take cognizance of the various methods of waste disposal and should work at their own level in healthy, natural ways of changing waste to wealth. Mere awareness, knowledge or realization will not help in dealing with the problem of waste management. As tainting the environment is done by us, Cleansing it, is also our duty. Mankind needs to scrub and rinse the whole environment to bring back its pristine glory of lush green landscape; blue orange painted sky.
Nature is ‘Ours’ We need to protect it.
Let’s start our relationship with the living world
Tread towards our surroundings
And gaze around the waste we have created.
Its just the right hour
Friends! Let’s toil to make our environs clean, spotless, pious, angelic.
