“Progress is impossible without waste, and the people who can’t put their minds in the finding of solution for the betterment of society need to do so for the coming generations.” We are living in a developing nation. It has to pass through a time period when there will be environmental pollution, emission of greenhouse gases, which will finally lead to climatic changes.
Taking a glimpse from the past at the time when the industrial revolution began in the decade of the 1830s where there was a lot of air pollution due to industries. The people started using masks due to air pollution in London at that time only. A lot of air pollution degraded their environment and spoiled their health along with mental health.
We are like a budding flower in the garden of industry and technology where many had already bloomed. Various household industries are running in our country and by this people are becoming self-employed and also becoming the job provider for others. The waste generated by them should be disposed properly by Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).
When we see our society at a glance of an industrialist, we will observe that we are having a rapid growth in terms of production, exports of various kinds of goods, and good economic growth.
During the industrial revolution, we were the importing country, now those countries are importing from us and we are dumping their waste in our country. From the viewpoint of development, we should progress but by keeping the needs and pink-health of future generations in our mind i.e. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.
We are social animals; so, it’s our fundamental responsibility to keep our society neat and tidy. The waste generated from the household, self-employed households, industries is becoming the biggest concern for us. The solid waste management is now becoming unmanageable for us from last 15 years. Municipal Solid Waste should be treated properly.
The moment we accept that pollution is making our living days less in counts then we will gain the power to change anything in our society and that anything will be our waste (solid, liquid, and atmospheric).
Every day we see that municipal corporation employees are coming and asking for separate waste (in terms of degradable and non-degradable) and many people get irritated without understanding the main cause. They are helping us in the management of all kinds of waste.
In the morning we see the sweepers, cleaning the drains and leachates of sever tanks. We often close our noses as we can’t bear that dirty smell. That time we should think about our daily activities of our house which is making their work tougher every day. We usually do not separate the wastes like oils, tea leaves, and other small things and we simply drain it. These small things are often ignored by us. Such wastes cause severe illness to us or to our family members or to the people of our locality.
It is MY WASTE and it is MY RESPONSIBILITY to find the solutions for it. As social workers first of all we need to make our locality aware of waste management. The way we need to separate the waste is biodegradable and non-biodegradable should be known to everyone in our society.
Our country is the second most populous in the world. Millions of tons of waste are produced per day but the biggest concern is that we are considering it as OUR waste, not as MY waste.
In every seminar, we are talking about the word REDUCE and REUSE but when we are in the market; and we are having our bag then also we usually ask the shopkeeper to give the vegetable in a polybag though we know that it is non-biodegradable. If we have the peels of vegetables that can be easily decomposed that we will pack in a poly-bag and then we will throw it. The material which can be decomposed now will not decompose. This kind of awareness should be there in society.
It is usually observed that when we are traveling in a car or in any of the public transport, we usually throw the rappers or groundnut peels either on the floor or outside on the road without caring about our locality and cleanliness. Such things are common and we are responsible for such waste. If we throw any waste in the dustbin and by chance it goes out of it then usually, we will not put it back in the dustbin and simply we will move out from there. For such things only and only we are responsible.
There was the initiation of a CLEAN INDIA MISSION which we followed as a festival. Many of us had really taken it into serious consideration but some of us had used it only for photographic purposes. When GANDHI JAYANTI was over the people were as usual as earlier according to their habits in the past. Such things should be avoided and we need to be responsible for our own waste otherwise we will be responsible for our own illness.
If a person wants to live peacefully s/he will surely need the help of nature. A good and loving atmosphere can be obtained in a clean and healthy environment which again needs pollution-free and clean surroundings. It’s the cycle of cleanliness that should be balanced with the naturalization of humans and the humanization of nature. Nature had humanized now it’s the time where we need to be naturalized accordingly.
We are having our plants and we put biochemicals for their growth. As an aware person, we can use the vegetable peel as manure that we hardly do. These things are not only for household waste but also for the water and air. Water is the most essential for our survival after the air. A lot of water pollution we see and we do but, hardly we had taken any step for its control. The most common is the washing of vegetables. After washing, we drain that water but if we critically examine the causes then there will be a conclusion about water conservation and that water can be utilized in the watering of plants, even can be used in washroom instead of fresh water and in various other purposes.
Our biosphere mainly consists of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. We live in a biosphere that we want to be neat and clean. We are aware of the lithosphere which we had polluted badly with land degradation. The atmosphere is severely polluted with carbons, CFCs, and other natural and chemical pollutants. Many people are suffering from the problem of asthma. We had spoiled the hydrosphere too. One day will come when the line “Water -Water everywhere but not a drop to drink” will come true. The biosphere includes all three spheres. So, the negative impact on us will also be three-time bigger. We need the capping of waste to stop it from exposing.
When we will understand our own responsibility as a citizen, as an individual, as a family head, as a social leader then we will get the ideas for the waste which is very harmful if it’s not taken care of and will be very useful if it is used wisely. It’s MY WASTE and it’s MY RESPONSIBILITY to manage it in a very efficient way. According to my field survey of the Lucknow area, I had concluded that people are living in the city but their waste is dumped outside of the city which is causing air pollution and land degradation. So instead of saying OUR WASTE, we should say MY WASTE and it is MY RESPONSIBILITY to manage it.
