Being a human being every person has certain responsibilities towards other people in the society. Being a family member everybody has responsibilities towards their family. Being the citizen of a certain nation every person has responsibilities towards their nation. ‘Responsibility’ therefore being a word used for a wider range of tasks and duties need to be understood vastly by people. We sometimes tend to take our responsibilities reluctantly as we think that it is something we would do only if we wish to. On the contrary, every person should realize their responsibilities and should abide by it in every situation. One should discern their concerns towards the things happening in their surroundings and then evaluate their responsibilities. Sometimes we don’t realize we are responsible for something because we feel that it is not ours to do. This might be the biggest reason for the poor waste treatment and management in our country and many parts of the world as we do not bother about the litter we create. In our country people distribute food to the poor outside temples as they want to do something good for people in need as responsible citizens of the society but they do not worry about the litter that they create outside the same temple, the used paper plates, plastic bags or leftovers ,as they don’t feel responsible for that. But a person who doesn’t feel responsible towards the scrap he created is not a good citizen of the society. If we really want to do something generous we should be kind to our mother nature in the first place, everything we have today is a gift from the environment and in the name of giving back we reward our ecosystem with heaps of garbage. We obtain vegetables, fruits, nutrients and minerals from the soil , in return we fill the same land with garbage. We obtain water from the rivers ,and pay back mother earth’s splendid creation with untreated industrial waste. In India, we worship our holy rivers and they have a status of God in our heads but our holy rivers face the most atrocious conditions in terms of cleanliness. People dump the items of worship into the river as a part of their prayers but how does it even do justice to the “holy river” if the prayers only destroy its allure. Also the roadsides are covered with heaps of garbage which is nothing but waste thrown by us which we assume as someone’s else’s responsibility to clear. In a nation as big as ours, it is impossible for few people to make a change, it requires everybody’s contribution. It is only possible when each and every citizen figures out their responsibility towards nature and towards the upcoming generations, and starts taking hold of what they are reliable for. Every person is as much responsible for the nation’s cleanliness as he/she is for their own place.
As every drop counts, there are certain ways in which each person can contribute to a future with better waste management and cleaner country. There are certain ways through which we can reduce the formation of a lot of scrap , instead of using flyers for the rally people can use small transports like rickshaws and assign their owners to roam in small households and announce their agendas on the speakers. This way we can eliminate the waste caused in small localities due to the flyers from the rally. Instead of making greeting cards or invitation cards for weddings, parties or mourning assembly, we can instead send the invites through messages . This way a lot of paper is saved from getting wasted as once the purpose is solved invites are thrown into garbage. Big leaders who have some important messages to deliver to their people or to the nation, instead of sending written notes ,can record their messages and send them through calls, like respected CM of Delhi Mr. Arvind Kejriwal does. He always records his concerns and gets them delivered through phone to every person. This also ensures that the message is delivered to a much wider audience than before and also prevents a lot of things from being wasted. But still there are a lot of things that we cannot save from being scraped, for this we must know what we can do from our end to ensure proper disposal of our own waste so that it doesn’t harm the environment. We can use as much biodegradable stuff or recyclable materials as we can at our homes so that these things can either get used again or get decomposed into the soil, in both ways reducing the scrap and therefore preventing the environment. We can divide the garbage in our homes into three core categories , first being the fluid waste , second being the solid rubbish containing papers , plastics etc. and third being the biodegradable waste from the kitchen like used tea leaves, straws etc. and assigning different dustbins for each. The fluid waste and solid waste in this way would be tied into two different polythene bags, hence preventing the mixing of solid and fluid waste which is biggest reason of the poor waste management in India .The biodegradable waste from the third dustbin can be used as manure for the plants in our homes or maybe for any park nearby us. Anyone can easily make compost at home by blending the vegetable peels, fruit peels, straws etc. with water or by simply putting this waste into a pit in the soil for 35 days will also work excellently. This will not only help in proper waste management but also reduces our dependence on chemicals and chemical fertilizers. The solid waste would be taken by the rag pickers and then sent to the waste treatment plants or land fills accordingly. Proper disposal of waste is very important. We can all relate that there are a lot of things in every house that are of no use or their uses are limited, instead of throwing them on roads or in the dustbins we should rather sell them to a scrap dealer who would take the item which can be recycled and pay you for it. In this way, the waste can be made useful. There is a lot we can do in our daily lives that would make a big difference. The government has interpolated two types of bins at every one kilo meter in the entire country. One of these is green colored which is for solid rubbish or dry waste another one is blue colored for fluid waste . Instead of littering the roads we could throw our chocolate wrappers ,crushed juice can , ice cream boxes etc. into these dustbins. Even if we do not find public bins around us , rather than throwing the garbage into rivers or on roads we can rather carry it with us and throw it whenever we find a bin. These basic habits should be incorporated in small children at our homes by us ,so that they cherish these values with them throughout life and become responsible citizens. As a human being, we tend to be concerned about every new thing we purchase and this concern increases with the increase in the prices we paid for the product. We have wariness towards our electronics as we have paid ample amounts for it but we lose our circumspections while disposing off our electronics, worrying about disposing the electronics is as much needed. The government has set up black colored dustbins at several places where we can throw the old electronics and then they are incinerated. Apart from this, a lot of electronics’ shop provide the provision for disposing of the e-waste. Women can ensure the proper disposal of sanitary pads, one should never throw used sanitary pads without properly wrapping it into paper. Used pads or diapers should never be thrown in open or should never be flushed. This will prevent us and others from a lot of diseases.
Proper disposal of all types of wastes is important as the heaps of garbage lead to a lot of skin and respiratory diseases. Also, it affects the hygiene and sanitation of small localities, ‘juggies’ etc. causing severe health problems leading to cancer and sanitation problems. Proper E-waste management is the need of the hour as e-waste contains hazardous and toxic elements like mercury, lead ,cadmium etc. which can affect the brain, heart ,liver , kidney and skeletal system. Sanitary pads or diapers thrown open on roads could cause a lot of diseases and smell. These on being flushed can clog drains and even spoil the water which might not even get properly treated in water treatment plants. It’s high time that we realize that our environment needs us and discern our responsibilities towards the waste we create before it creates an abysmal situation which would be out of everybody’s control. So we should try everything we can from our end.
