My Waste ,My Responsibility
Waste is basically an unwanted or unusable substance. Unusable means which is of no value i.e. cannot be used anymore. There are various kinds of waste. Waste can be biodegradable and non-biodegradable .Biodegradable means which can be reused or decomposed by bacteria .Example- vegetables and fruits Non-Biodegradable means the waste which can be decomposed. They keep on accumulating for thosands of years. Example- Plastic.
Our main emphasis is to understand the concept of waste management. Waste Management is the process of managing waste from beginning till its final disposal .The process of waste management includes various steps like Collection of waste, Transportation of waste, Treatment of waste and disposal of waste. Waste can be in any form i.e. Solid,Liquid or Gas.Each kind of waste has its own method of disposal and management. Waste needs to be managed properly as it is necessary for a sustainable environment.
Certain important points that need to be kept in mind for waste management:
1) Classification of Waste –
Waste needs to be segregated as wet or dry waste. Separate bins need to be used by segregating waste. Green coloured bins are made for wet and biodegradable waste example – kitchen waste including fruits and vegetables. Blue dustbins are meant for disposal of dry and non biodegradable waste example plastic. Black bins should be used for disposing of electronic waste .
2) 3 R’s should be followed:
Reduce ,Reuse and Recycle are the Management Strategies for waste management and disposal. The aim of 3R’s is to reduce the amount of end waste generated. Reuse the product delete have value and follow various methods of recycling.
One fact that we all are aware of is that newspaper and iron materials like tools are not thrown in dustbins. They are given as junk. In Junk, newspapers and iron materials are being recycled. By following three R”s life cycle of a product is also increased which ultimately helps in reducing the amount of end waste.
3) Less utilisation of Non Biodegradable material-
Use of biodegradable substances should be reduced or banned by government as it leads to increase in waste .As this cannot be recycled. The lie on a particular place for thousands of years ,example plastic is a non biodegradable material it keeps on collecting and heaps of waste is built which pollute the environment. It affects the animals like cows and as they try to find food in the garbage and when they eat plastic polythene as food , it chokes their throat and these animals die. In order to improve the waste management in the country we need to begin from the base.
As a Responsible citizen of the country every individual should take a pledge to contribute in the best way in the process of waste management .As an educated person ,majority of citizens know about steps to be taken in the process of waste management.
1) need to be united and work for the Welfare of the nation. ” Alone we are weak, Together we are strong”. Keeping this view in mind, we should contribute selflessly in managing waste.
2) Follow 3R’s and use separate bins for wet, dry and electronic waste.
3) Plastic needs to be banned and usage of eco-friendly material should be encouraged.
4) Every society should form a group and there should be a group leader to view the performance frequently.
5) awareness should be made in the area of waste management so that the majority of people working for waste management initiative.
There steps to reduce waste :
1) Use a reusable bottle:
Don’t use plastic bottle or thermocol glasses as they cannot be recycled and leads to formation of garbage. Instead use reusable bottle that will save money and reduce waste.
2) Use reusable bag for grocery-
Instead of using a plastic bottle use a cloth bag that is reusable in nature .Avoid usage of one -time -use of plastic bag.
3) Avoid single use food and drink utensils:
Try to avoid disposable utensils, straws and napkins . Instead used utensils of Steel Avoid use of plastic as much as possible.
Kitchen waste can be used as manure in the garden. All the peeks of fruits and vegetables ,eggshells, leaves, coffee grounds can be composted. Manure is the best fertilizer rather than using chemical fertilizer use manual will improve the yield.
5)Curb use of paper:
In today’s digitalised world most organisation use paper bills . Rather than using paper bills, bills can be sent through emails also. Save paper Save life.
6) Buy in bulk :
Shop at local farmers market as you will get fresh ingredients otherwise foods have to be kept in refrigerators as they have to be transported to long distances .When we buy in bulk ,we need to bring cloth bags to buy items rather than plastic polythenes.
Waste reduction is the need of the hour as waste management mainly includes Reduction of waste .Waste pollutes the environment and non- biodegradable waste emit various harmful gases that pollute the environment. The basic aim of waste reduction is to reduce the amount of end waste that is Residue. The less the Residue will be the more efficient waste management will become. Certain items that can be recycled are:
1) Glass Containers:
Glass materias are eco -friendly. The can be recycled easily.
2) Steel Cans:
Steel cans which are used for juices,, soups etc can also be recycled easily.
There are various materials that cab be recycled easily. Eg- Aluminium cans, Paperboard ,Cardboard etc.
My waste is my responsibility as a responsible citizen , its our duty to segregate waste and follow 3R’s and properly follow the concept of waste management.
