INTRODUCTION: Waste is something which is thrown out after the utilization. But the main responsibility of ours is not to consider waste as ‘WASTE’. The main thought, which must need to cover up our mind, is that, the word ‘WASTE’ itself is ‘WASTE’ and nothing else.
DESCRIPTION: Waste can be of many forms like organic inorganic and sanitary waste while organic wastes are again sub divided into recyclable and non recyclable.
But many of us are not aware of how the waste can be used or even though we know, we ignore it. Managing the waste in an effective manner has become crucial nowadays and it is also a responsibility as a citizen.
The important responsibility is to segregate the wastes. Segregating makes easy for recycling. Dry waste which is non biodegradable such as glass, textiles, plastic etc can be recycled to create new products. But if dry wastes turn wet, it is rejected for recycling as it costs too much for recycling. These dry wastes can be used as fuel, but if it gets wet, it reduces calorific value.
Waste can be accumulated only if we ‘USE’ it ‘LESS’ but it is not ‘useless’. This can be seen in hotels, parties, ceremonies or any other functions. In order to avoid these wastages, self-services can be practiced, or the food, which is excess can be donated to Ashrams or any other NGO’s so that we can eliminate it from getting waste. So this being an important responsibility of ours, it helps to save our environment from being polluted.
Another crucial responsibility is not to through the wastes in public places. We should be accountable towards keeping our surroundings with hygiene. As, one action speak thousands of words, instead of teaching everyone around, firstly instead of saying, ‘It’s my waste, please pick it up’, we must say it’s my waste, I will clean it up as it is my responsibility. So here, the responsibility has to get transferred. It doesn’t mean we are contributing to environment, but we are contributing ourselves/ towards our health.
Why shouldn’t we through the waste in public places..?? The answer is that, it does not only harm our environment, but it is also very dangerous to domestic animals too. For Example: If we through the food with plastic cover, what if the animals eat the food along with the plastic cover? Who will be held responsible for its death?
So, in order to make Waste Management effective, Our Prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, has started ‘Swacch Bharat Abiyan’ on 2nd October 2014, on account of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. It reflects on the importance of cleanliness, and it spreaded the concept of sanitation.
Chief Minister BS Yeddiyurappa recently has launched a proposed waste-based power plant at Karnataka Power Corporation, Bidadi. He also expressed confidence that the plant would make a significant contribution to free up the garbage of Bangalore, capital city of Karnataka. Bangalore generates over 5,000 metric tons of waste every day. The unit being set up for scientific disposal, He explained that up to 25 percent of the daily output is processed and used for power generation.
In addition to waste disposal, the construction of this unit will help in creating the employment opportunities. As, Prime Minister’s concept of Swaavalambhi Bharath’, it contributes to the large scale use of the flavored (swadeshi) power plant. This project could also help to accommodate the waste in the Ramanagar district.
This project includes:
Power generation capacity = 11.5 Megawatts
Use of processed waste every day = 600 tons
This is an important mantra, which we need to chant in order to avoid the waste getting wasted. They are – reduce, recycle, and reuse, this is popularly known as 3R which is very important.
Reduce: – The waste has to be reduced to minimum extent possible; there are many of such examples in our surroundings. For example: If we have our meals in hotels, instead of bringing it parcel to home, and while purchasing, we must satisfy our requirements and purchasing unnecessary items should be avoided, by purchasing unnecessary items, we are not purchasing the items, but only waste.
Recycle: It is also an important factor which avoids unnecessary wastes. For example: If plastic bag has thickness more than 5 microns, then it can be recycled, and even the paper can be recycled.
Reuse: This is the factor which has to be done in an effective and efficient manner. It means that many of the products can be used for same purpose. For example: In KSRTC dipos, dirty water is recycled by purifying, and used for cleaning vehicles.
For generation of electricity, solar panels, water can be used instead of coal, so that it reduces environmental pollution.
Many Corporate companies, being socially responsible has come forward in applying the concept of 3R i.e. Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.
Taking the responsibility has been very burdensome. As we are seeing since many days, Waste Management can only be seen in papers. Practically applying these concepts require a huge investment. But the huge investment is nothing but my strong mind or our strong mind. We must include this phrase; “don’t wait for the change to happen, change yourself”. By following this, it helps to clean our environment.
Firstly, our home should get cleaned, then, our street and then, area, and then gradually and finally our country. If everyone follows this with unity, not only our country, the whole world gets cleaned.
But, the main important thing, which we must know is that, this cannot happen by a single person or if the single person or group of persons is not ready to get changed. Always remember that, there is no U N _ T Y without “I”. So, nothing can be changed, until I get changed. As, it helps for our growth, taking the responsibility towards managing the waste is crucial.
As we have much technological advancement as of now, we can make best use of it for reaching this message to a larger number of people. Many campaigns are being done in order to spread the message of importance of cleanliness.
We can do a bit for our society by keeping our surrounding clean and encouraging by participating in the campaigns taking this as Responsibility.
