One of the most efficient material ever made by humankind is plastic or scientifically called as polymers. Due to it’s awesome materialistic properties such as non-conductor of electricity and due to it’s resistance to water it can be used for many applications.Plastics revolutionized medicine with life-saving devices, made space travel possible, lightened cars and jets saving fuel and pollution and saved lives with helmets, incubators, and equipment for clean drinking water. It has become a boon to humanity and till now plastic cannot be replaced by any other material, it has a stronghold in our everyday life. The conveniences plastics offer, however, led to a throw-away culture that reveals the material’s dark side: today, single-use plastics are the most destructive as they are used extensively such as plastic bags and food wrappers, have a lifespan of mere minutes to hours, yet they may persist in the environment for hundreds of years.
It might be a boon for humanity but it is also a curse to the environment. Due to its destructive property, it is harming nature and also the wildlife habitat and some or the other way it is harming humanity too.One of the main reasons which causes all the issues is that it’s non-degradability plastics often contain additives making them stronger, more flexible, and durable. But many of these additives can extend the life of products if they become litter, with some estimates ranging to at least 400 years to break down.Millions of animals are killed by plastics every year, from birds to fish to other marine organisms. Nearly 700 species, including endangered ones, are known to have been affected by plastics. Nearly every species of seabird eats plastics.Due to this they used plastic is piling up in oceans beaches, land plots and are causing soil pollution, water pollution and we cannot ever burn the plastic waste because when gets burnt it causes air pollution, breathing this could cause lung damage or even cancer.Even animals are not safe from the mess we have created, Plastics have been consumed by land-based animals, including elephants, hyenas, zebras, tigers, camels, cattle, and other large mammals, in some cases causing death.Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic waste escapes into the oceans from coastal nations. That’s the equivalent of setting five garbage bags full of trash on every foot of coastline around the world.
Nowadays due to the government restrictions on plastic has made us go towards alternatives-such as paper bags and cloth bags, I know is just not gonna do much but it’s a small step in getting out of the plastic ecosystem. As it is my waste and it’s my responsibility to maintain it and dispose of it correctly, we have to take some precaution to preserve nature, as of now earth is the only place where we can live and we have no plan B.
These days Recycling all the waste plastics has become a trend and even the unwanted plastic for us is becoming a wealth for the companies which recycle plastics. As they give back recycled plastic to the company who in turn uses the recycled plastic and turn it into any other form, this reduces and we can segregate at the source and we can use recycled instead. This not only makes both parties of the company profitable it also reduces the cost.
Thinking that it can only be done in large quantities is just not going to solve the problem,we can reduce plastic from the communities or in our own house reducing plastic bags, plastic wraps etc can make a drastic change in making a step easier to control the plastic pollution. Plastic is an enemy not only for nature but also for us too. We have to stand together to remove this mess which we created,
I know one day we would have plastic ridden life and instead of plastic we would have an alternative and this day is not far from now.
