Plastic: From waste to wealth.

December 5, 2020

Introduction :
Not today, but Plastic is a thread to the planet since its birth. Plastic has become one of the most used substance today. We can see it almost everywhere in our surrounding from Super markets to local stores. Even the pen that is being used to write this essay is made of plastic! if plastic is so use full then why is it considered deadly ? Indeed plastic is non-biodegradable, but the ultimate harm to the nature is plastic waste and not plastic. So, what if we convert this waste to wealth!
But how ?
Every thing has a bright Side, One of the greatest advantage of plastic over its disadvantages is that it can be ‘ RECYCLED ‘.Do you know over 30,000 plastic bottles are dumped everyday in Leh’ ? by the tourists. This waste either ends up in Landfills or is burnt. So, to convert this waste into wealth an organization in Ladakh named ” AGROW ” collect all these plastic bottles and convert them into Bottle Brick ! Bottle brick is a used plastic bottle, full of plastic trash in it, and can be used as a brick.
This is just the beginning. Do you know India generated 1.5 million matric tons trash everyday, forming huge mountains of trash like Deonar. Tons of plastic, glass and papers (mostly dry waste) contribute in formation of these mountains. These plastic and other waste are collected by an organization called ‘ RADDICONNECT ‘ and processed. Where they compress these dry waste and convert it into ‘ TETRA PAK ‘. Tetra pak is a wood like material which can be used for making furniture and other sustainable things. Isn’t this alternative a revolution ! that turns waste into wealth. Once Plastic waste is separated, it is converted into flakes, these flakes are converted into fiber and these fiber are used to make clothes. Do you know the Indian cricket team’s new jersey are made out of 33 recycled plastic bottles, all thanks to such organization for their good work.
Not only land, unfortunately there is a huge amount of plastic waste in oceans and other water bodies. Experts predict that in 30 years there will be more plastic in our ocean than fishes. Fortunately many companies like Adidas have taken initiative to turn marine pollution into Sports wear. Adidas collect all the plastic waste from the coastal regions like Maldives, in the processing plant plastic bottles that contains polyethylene terephthalate or PET are processed and converted into a form of polyester yarn to make upper part of shoes and jerseys. Adidas goal is to replace all virgin polyester with recycled polyester by 2024.
Conclusion
We can learn from these great organization, they are doing things that seems to be impossible. As India is generating tons of waste everyday, India can also generate wealth form this waste, lets make this possible by spreading the knowledge and and helping recycling plants.
