Plastic is the most dangerous substance in the world, which destroys life on earth, if it is not utilized properly. Most of the people don’t have knowledge of using plastic and its products. In India, urban and rural areas are producing high quantity of plastic garbage daily. In most of the areas, people don’t even use dustbins nor they have garbage facility. Plastic disposal is the most serious issue, now a days.
HARMFUL EFFECTS OF PLASTIC :
Humans use plastic everyday for many activities. There will not be a single day without usage of plastic. But we face a severe problem in its disposal. The major problem of plastic disposal is ,it takes millions of years to decompose. It destroys the fertility of the soil, if buried. It pollutes the air and water, if burnt; totally disturbing the nature. It causes severe threat to living organisms. It leads to several skin and health issues. In many areas, cattle are dying by eating plastic wastage. It creates great loss to the farm by utilizing all the nutrients present in the soil. Thus, destroying the whole farm, a greater crises to the farmer. By that, we are facing scarcity of food.
Next is the water problem, which have already started few years back. Some villages in India don’t even have safe drinking water, which is a compulsory thing to survive. The primary thing to survive on the earth is the Air, which also gets polluted or contaminated due to the burning of plastic waste.
RECYCLING OF PLASTIC WASTE :
There is no product or material without plastic. So the thing we should do is to recycle the plastic waste. Plastic can be recycled and also be used for different purposes. In this, scrap dealers play an important role in recycling the plastic. They collect all the plastic waste and separate the recyclable products. They sell the recyclable products to some local factories, where recycling takes place. For this, the scrap dealers are paid.
In such a case, we have a plastic sack manufacturer, Ahmed Khan, belongs to Bangalore. He has been producing plastic sacks for 20 years. Polyblend, a fine powder of recycled modified plastic, was developed in his company. This polyblend, when mixed with bitumen, is used for laying roads. Along with Bangalore City Corporation, Ahmed Khan proved that blends of polyblend and bitumen, when used for laying roads, enhanced the bitumen’s water repellant properties. This increased the life span of roads by three times. By this technique, he laid 40 kilometers of road in Bangalore, by 2002.
Not only by laying roads, we can also use the recycled plastic in making many household and industrial products.
REUSE OF PLASTIC :
The best way to manage the plastic waste is to reuse it. We can use the plastic covers for at least 4-5 times before throwing. We can store things which will not be spoiled for several days. Plastic can be used as an decorative item for the house. Likewise we can get many ways to reuse plastic.
By this, we can say that plastic should be reused or recycled properly, in order to save life and environment. For this, NGO’s have to educate people on plastic disposal in remote areas. Schools and Colleges have to teach students, on recycling and reusing of plastic. And students have to educate their parents. If we start, at least from now, then we can save our earth as well as our future generations.
