Plastic: From Waste to Wealth
Plastic, with its exclusive Plasticc, with its exclusive qualities is now a serious worldwide
environmental and health concern, essentially due to its nonbiodegradable nature. More than 50% of the plastic waste
generated in the country is recycled and used in themanufacture of various plasticproducts.
Dioxin is a highly carcinogenic and toxic by-product of the
manufacturing process of plastics. Burning of plastics,
especially PVC, releases this dioxin and also furan into the
Plastics are so versatile in use that their impact on the
environment is extremely wide ranging. Careless disposal of
plastic bags chokes drains, blocks the porosity of the soil and
causes problems for groundwater recharge. Plastic disturbs the
soil microbial activity. Plastic bags can also contaminate
foodstuffs due to leaching of toxic dyes and transfer of
pathogens. In fact, a major portion of the plastic bags i.e.
approximately 60-80% of the plastic waste generated in India
is collected and segregated for recycling. 20 – 40% remains
strewn on the ground, littered around in open drains.
USE OF PLASTIC WASTE AS A RESOURCE
• India Plastic Recycling Industry give Employment and business Opportunities to many families. Its Turnover is Rs.15, 000 Crores, Volume recycled is 2.6 MillionTonnes, No. of units are 10,000,employment about 3.5 Million, Rag Pickers about 1.5 Million.
Carbon Recycling:Fuel from Plastic Waste: 1 MT Waste yielding 900 litres of Diesel conforming to highest quality EN 590 diesel. Maharastra signs MOU to produce fuel from plastic.
Recycling on roads : Use of Plastic Waste for better roads.
Energy Recovery: Co-Processing in cement kiln : Partial substitution of fossil fuel. Process has been certified by approved pollution control authority in India. Its benefit is all types of plastic waste fed without segregation / without adequate cleaning. ICPE-ACC Plant established in Kymore, M.P. in India for the first time.
Properties that makes Plastic Waste suitable for roads construction
• Better Coating Ability to aggregates
• Improved bonding between binder & aggregates
• Higher Marshall stability
• Higher resistance to fatigue and permanent deformation characteristics.
• Less susceptibility to water damage.
Issue: Health & Safety :
• Use of polyethylene in contact with food stuffs, pharmaceuticals and drinking water is approved by regulatory authorities across the world including that in India
What is recycling?
Recycling is the process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products. Recycling can benefit your community, the economy and the environment.
Is recycling truly beneficial for the environment?
EPA data show that recycling conserves energy and natural resources. For example:
Recycling one ton of office paper can save the energy equivalent of consuming 322 gallons of gasoline.
Recycling just one ton of aluminum cans conserves more than 152 million Btu, the equivalent of 1,024 gallons of gasoline or 21 barrels of oil consumed.
Plastic bottles are the most recycled plastic product in the United States as of 2015, according to our most recent report. Recycling just 10 plastic bottles saves enough energy to power a laptop for more than 25 hours.
How do I know what my local recycling options are?
Please contact your local county or municipality to determine your local recycling options. Additionally, please check out the I Want To Be Recycled
This program has very long vision to run it and in the future it would like to some technical aspect like GPS system, what will help to know the covering area or location and selected area. Linkage with different stakeholders and work on other social work related to environment and livelihood of people and which could make better life. Through the plantation and organic cultivation, program could promote JLG and producer group and provide the education of other facilities to rag-pickers.
This program has very specific concept to remove unnecessary thins from social and environment and work with community and focus group. For sustainable development it is possible to reach the program goal and fulfil the objectives. Program will work with different stakeholders and staff members and make better living standard with income generation from plastic waste. Most beautiful thing is people involvement and they could change their behaviour.
