Plastic is one of the items used in our daily life and it has become our necessity. Nowadays, plastic has become a problem for everyone and why not. We want those things which can be thrown easily but never think its after effects because of which plastic has been vilified. If we use plastic in an accurate manner then it will not harm our environment. Only 9% of all plastic waste ever produced has been recycled. About 12% has been incinerated, while the rest- 79%- has accumulated in landfills, dumps or the natural environment. Technology has developed enough to recycle plastic. Non-recyclable plastics can be transformed into useful items like egg cartons, vents, speed bumps, cables and more. Cold plasma pyrolysis can be used to convert waste plastics into hydrogen, methane and ethylene. Both hydrogen and methane can be used as clean fuels, since they only produce minimal amounts of harmful compounds such as soot, carbon dioxide and unburnt hydrocarbons.
Plastic can benefit the economy also. Because of light weight, transportation can be easily done. It helps in protecting and preserving goods. It saves fuel and reduces greenhouse gases emissions. From computer and cellphones to television and microwave, durable light weight and affordable plastics have helped revolutionize the electronics we rely on every day.
Plastic shredding machine can crush plastic waste which becomes a boon for road building. “Vengurla has 12 km of plastic roads and earns INR 15 per kg of plastic sold to contractors for road-building in nearby areas”. Plastic waste is not a problem it can be a boon for us if we manage it properly but if we can’t do it effectively waste will follow us everywhere and become a curse.
Waste management is not only a problem but unemployment is also a problem that is persisting from many years. Unemployment can be solved by plastics. Industrialists can setup a plastic based industry in which unemployed people can work and fulfil their needs. In 2020, the unemployment rate in India is estimated to be 5.4 percent .
There are less amount of resources available on earth and can be extinct due to which our future generation will not be able to use them. We need no proof for saying that plastic is available in major amount. It is the only resource which can replace non-renewable resources. Plastic can be recycled back after its no use which makes it more useful. It can be available all the time. Besides some hazards it is also filled with benefits which should be looked out by everyone of US. Plastic is a polymer( a polymer is a substance or material consisting of very large molecules, or macromolecules, composes of many repeating subunits). We must learn how to manage waste. Plastic is that hidden wealth which needs to be seen by us. We have to change our perspective towards plastic.
