In today’s society life without plastic is nearly impossible. We depend on it for our basic needs. But on the other hand, plastic pollution has also increased a lot.
Plastic pollutes the water, tones of plastic are dumped into ocean, lakes, seas. As plastic does not dissolve in water, it hampers the quality of water. Marine animals, on consumption of plastic lead to death. Land and soil are also polluted by plastic. Plastic pollution causes harm to humans, animals and plants. It takes around hundred or may be thousands of years to degrade.
Plastic pollution is a global problem. If we talk about our country India, then according to CENTRAL POLLUTION CONTROL BOARD (CPCB), India generates about 26000 tones of plastic a day and from that 10000 tones of plastic waste remains uncollected a day. And as per FEDERATION OF INDIAN CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY (FICCI) has study that plastic processing industry is estimated to grow to 22 million tones a year by 2020. Plastic pollutes the drainage system, because plastic bags get stuck into the system and stop the flow of drainage waste. On burning of plastic it releases poisonous chemicals into the atmosphere which leads to air pollution and it causes respiratory disorders in animals and humans.
National environment estimates that approximately 100000 sea turtles and other marine animals die are every year because they get strangled in bags. Tea cups are a huge source of plastic pollution as they contain a plastic paste known as polyethylene which helps the cup to keep your tea warm.
Countries like China, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Sri-Lanka, Thailand, Egypt and Malaysia are some of major plastic waste polluters. It was estimated that global production of plastic is approximately 250mt/yr. Their presence has been found to transport persistent organic pollutants, also known as pops. These pollutants have been linked to an increased distribution of algae associated with red tides. It is estimated that 1.1 million to 8.8 million tones of plastic waste enters the ocean from coastal communities each year with much of plastic entering the seas is in particles smaller than 5 millimeters. A scientific study based on material flow analysis estimated that about 86 million tones of plastic waste debris is present in worldwide ocean as of the end of 2013.
Plastic has also some types, like microplastic, which are small plastic pieces of less than five millimeters in size. These kinds of plastic are mostly used in cosmetics items. It also includes primary and secondary plastics. Primary microplastics are designed for commercial use such as microfiber shed from clothing, bottle cap etc. Secondary microplastics are particles that result from breakdown of larger plastic item such as water bottles.
Since plastic is non-biodegradable, recycling it is a part of global efforts to reduce plastic pollution. Recycling and reusing of materials like plastic bags is one of the best way to reduce waste produced on the earth. instead of plastic bags gunny bags and paper bags should be used. The below mentioned are some of the steps from which plastic waste has converted to plastic wealth. They are :- reduce, reuse and recycle. REDUCE :- First step is to minimize single use plastic by supporting a tax on plastic bags. Use alternatives of plastic bags like gunny bags and paper bags. REUSE :- By reusing plastic bags, there is decrement in demand for new plastics. RECYCLE :- Plastic recycling is the process of recovering waste or scrap plastic and reprocessing it into useful products.
Nowadays plastic waste is used as a resource. In India plastic recycling industry give employment and business opportunities to many families. Its turnover is more than 15000 crores. Maharashtra signs MOU to produce fuel from plastic. Plastic waste is used for making better roads. Plastic roads mainly use plastic carry bags, disposable cups and plastic bottles that are collected from garbage dumps. Using a plastic waste as modifier, reduces the quantity of cement and sand by their weight.
The walls built by plastic bottles are lighter than the walls built by brick and block, and that makes these buildings to show a good response against earthquake. Due to compaction of falling materials in each bottle, resistance of each bottle against the load is 20 times higher compared to brick plastic bottles can cause the green construction by saving energy and resources, recycling materials, minimizing the emission, having significant operational saving and increasing work place productivity.
In current scenario, plastic waste is used to reduce energy use age, it reduces the consumption of fresh row materials. It also reduces water pollution and air pollution by reducing the need for convectional waste disposal and it also reduces greenhouse gas emission. Pet plastic is used for high impact resistant container for packaging of soda bottles, edible oil and peanut butter. By this , now plastic is one of the most disposable materials in modern world.
“RECYCLE TODAY FOR BETTER TOMORROW”.
By seeing the current environment situation we can say that plastic waste has reduced to some extent and it is used as a wealth.
