WASTE MANAGEMENT THROUGH WASTE SEGREGATION
Environmental pollution is the biggest menace to human race on this planet today. Rapid industrial development has caused a lot of ecological problems such as air pollution, water pollution, land pollution, growth of population, the shortage of natural resources etc. Industrialisation and a growing consumer economy have led to the creation of huge megapolises with their problems of undisposed garbage and uncontrolled sewage. Here,it gained the importance of Waste Management by segregating wastes in its sources.
Due to an increase in population, the generation of waste is getting doubled day by day. The increase in waste affects the lives of many people especially those people living in the slum areas because they are very close to the waste disposal area. Therefore they are prone to various diseases and health related issues. In order to maintain a healthy life managing of wastes in its correct methods is of so important.
Waste Management means managing of waste by disposal and recycling it without causing any harm to the environment and the ecology. There are various methods and techniques by which the waste is disposed of such as Segregation, composting, landfills, recycling, incineration etc. segregation means sorting the wastes according their nature. Composting results in converting of organic wastes into fertilizers. Landfills refers to systematic burial of waste in layers (soil and wastes).Recycling means reusing of things that are scrapped of.Incineration Called converting waste materials into ash, flue gas and heat. These methods helps to decrease bad odour, reduces pollution, reduces the production of waste, it generates employment, produces energy etc.
Among these methods Segregation of waste is of atmost important. Source Segregation means the generator of the waste Segregates the wastes in predefined groups to enable higher resource recovery through recycling.
It is the most relevant step that will help the environment to reduce the risks of accumulation of garbage in the land, thus escaping from bad odour, health problems, epidemics etc. The simplest way to Segregate waste is practicing a proper on site Segregation through clearly marked containers for different kinds of wastes.
Waste Segregation means dividing the wastes according to their type and adopting the appropriate treatments and disposal.Mainly wastes are divided into two wet and Dry waste. WET WASTES Include food particles, fruits, flowers, garden waste etc. These are organic and biodegradable materials. Dry waste includes wood and related products, metals and glass etc. Segregating and disposing of waste properly will not reduce the amount of toxins entering the atmosphere but is a way of saving the planet and lives of people. Not all wastes are the same and some of them are dangerous that they fall into the category of hazardous wastes.
Under the SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT RULES 2016 states it is the responsibility of generators to Segregate waste into three categories –WET, DRY AND HAZARDOUS WASTES,and to hand over the Segregated waste to authorised waste collectors or local bodies .The hazardous wastes are divided into HAZARDOUS AND NON-HAZARDOUS WASTES. Non-Hazardous waste are send to the waste stream of the city ,municipal area or to recycle units. Before Hazardous waste is disposed ,first to neutralise the harmful components in it.When it is ready for disposal waste can be sent to incinerators and landfills .DOMESTIC HAZARDOUS WASTES includes napkins, empty containers of cleaning agents, mosquito repellents etc.
The union ministry of Environment ,forests and climate change recently notified the new SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT RULES 2016.These will replace the MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE (MANAGEMENT AND HANDLING)RULES 2000.Plastic bottles, e-waste, biomedical, hazardous and construction and demolition waste Management are included in it.
Waste Segregation ultimately boils down to waste management which is the process of disposing, reprocessing, recycling and refining materials.Waste Segregation at source will help the environment and helps to reduce accumilation of garbage In the landfills.segregation post collection of garbage takes longer ,costs more and can wind up harming the environment if it leads to recyclable waste being sent to landfill. Segregation protects health. When waste pickers put their hands to Segregate, the decayed substance cause infections, sometimes wounds, diseases etc. So Segregation of waste in the source region is very relevant. If 100% source Segregation is achieved then 80% of it can be recycled.
WASTE Segregation is included in law because it is much easier to recycle. Effective Segregation of waste means that less waste goes to landfill then it makes cheaper and better for people and the environment. Some of the initiatives that push the people to Segregate are the‘2 bins 1bag’ programme in Bangalore, The ITCs WOW(wealth out of waste)programme originated in Andra Pradesh etc. and the Neighourhood champions campaign and so on.
The current waste Management in India includes collecting waste from sources through a community collective bin system after which it gets transported to a loW lying landfill system with intermediate processing of MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE (MSW).In DELHI it is yet to implement Segregation of waste at source ,be it household ,hotels, restaurants or other waste generators. The INDIA’S NATIONAL POLICY ON BIOFUELS also use raw materials such as cassava, damaged wheat grains, rotten potatoes, sugarcane etc.so from the bottom level we have to make a change. Our nation do many things but it is necessary to place our own signature. So promote ,encourage and participate in all ways of waste Segregation in homes.
Segregation at the source is necessary for recycling in the same way solar panels need to be placed in direct sunlight to generate solar energy. So as a first hand source Segregation mainly waste Segregation at home is very important. When you Segregate waste at home,it helps the waste pickers and disposal workers to tell the degradable components from the non biodegradable ones. This habit will considerably bring down the problems for your MUNICIPAL AUTHORITIES to manage solid waste. The only thing you need is awareness and the desire to act on it.When you Segregate waste at home daily ,you are winning half the battle as a responsible citizen.
A according to state of India’s position of GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT PERFORMANCE INDEX fell from 141 in 2016 to 177 in 2018. Source Segregation and waste management plays a vital role in environment protection. While every citizen should be responsible for safeguarding our environment. It’s the right time to make waste Segregation at source to a worldwide people’s movement. Gramin swachh Bharat Mission and Bal Swachhata Abhiyan are the projects under the swatchhata Mission.
IF we want to make the nation ,and the world, better for tomorrow’s adults it is our responsibility to take step towards solid waste Management for a healthier environment and less pollution. Effective solid waste Management begins with this crucial act of dividing disposable contents at the source. Inculating the habit of source Segregation at childhood stage may drive children’s to become a responsible and environment conscious youth. Today’s children are tomorrow’s nation builders and protectors.so be aware of this and act consistently. If we are ready to muster up the courage as a responsible citizen of India ,to make a change in ourselves ,then it really become a people’s movement .A MOVEMENT THAT WILL CROSS ALL THE WORLD NATIONS.
