COVID-19 has introduced a new life protective plastic layer to human I meant the PPE kit, gloves etc. We filled earth with wastes especially the non biodegradable plastics but we haven’t experienced a life under a plastic layer. Now the situation changed, during this pandemic situation we too covered by plastics and we can’t tolerate. Sometimes God may be trying to teach people about the difficulty the earth is tolerating. Also population is increasing day by day thereby wastes are also doubling day by day. So it is the peak time to free earth from plastic coating by managing waste. What is waste management? Who is or are responsible? Why we should manage waste? What we can do? Let us discuss.
Waste management is the process of converting waste materials into useful things either by recycling or reusing it. Otherwise, by simply disposing in a healthy and safely manner. ‘My waste My responsibility’ should be our motto. Some people may think that why should I taking responsibility and I am not producing or dumping tonnes of waste. What happens if all people in the world think like this? Simply look around you and find out how many items are plastic. The number is directly proportional to our dependency of it. Now multiply your answer with number of people in your circle, city, district, state, country, world. The sum is infinity. So everyone is responsible for managing waste. Let the campaign of waste management start right from the home. If everybody succeed in managing waste in their home, its a great thing. Are you ready?
It is pathetic to hear our holy river Ganga and Yamuna are among top polluted rivers, people living near landfills are suffering a lot of health issues, many marine lives are in danger zone due to plastic consumption etc. Since the right sewage treatment takes time and money, many companies simply discharge waste directly into water bodies. If the condition worsen we can’t do anything and this is the right time to take actions. Few companies started initiatives especially soft drink companies to reuse and recycle plastic bottles so as to reduce production of plastic bottles. For maintaining biodiversity, healthy mind and body, pollution free environment etc we must manage waste. May the black hands turn white, hard hearts melt to do good deeds. Let us hope our eyes could sense the real beauty of nature where our nature donot need protection!
For every problems, there will be solutions like every lock has a key.We are also facing a puzzle for plastic elimination. The scientist in you should come out to solve it. Few recycling ideas are given below:
•Plastic wastes are recycled to polyester, shoes
• Plastic wastes are converted into fuels, electricity, energy.
•In Kerala and Srilanka ‘EcoSan’ toilets are implemented.
•Ahmed khan proved blends of polyblend and bitumen can use to lay roads, enhance water repellent properties and increased road life by a factor of three.
• Plastic is also included as an ingredient in interlocks.
Thanks to innovations like this. However, India is still a developing country and have many limitations to do all these things to its extreme. Machines for these are costly. We people are following traditional way of removing waste from home when rag-pickers collect. Also, the social status of rag-pickers is pretty low. The eyes of many see rag-pickers as waste fellows. This angle of judgement should change. They are also human. They are collecting waste for their livelihood and it is because of them we are living in a clean environment. Many countries adopted machines for collecting waste but here those people collect waste bare handedly and suffering a lot of health issues. If I could suggest for empowerment of rag-pickers I would like to increase salary of them and provide assistance of machines to create smart kabadiwalls.
E-wastes are also a big problems for developing countries like India, China, Pakistan. It is because in developed countries recovery of metals like silver, gold, silicon, nickel is done by machines during recycling but in developing countries manual participation is involved. This causes health related issues.Since recycling is the only solution for treatment of e-waste. It is advisable to import machines to recycle in an ecofriendly manner.
Nuclear waste or radioactive waste is extremely difficult to manage. It causes mutations, cancer, even lethal at high doses. Therefore it is said to pre- treat before burying and should bury about 500m deep below the earth surface.
As discussed earlier, management of waste must start from home. Here are some simple methods that you can do at your home:
•Stop using plastic bags instead use cloth bags or paper bags.
• Use kitchen waste as manure for garden or use to make compost.
• Reuse plastic bottles for making wall decor, hanging plants in your garden.
• Buy a pen and refill it instead of buying another.
•Try DIY with your bottles.
•Use AC water for watering garden plants and washbasin water for toilet flush. Thus conserve water without wasting.
• Sanitary napkins should be disposed in a healthy manner.
• Segregate biodegradable and non biodegradable wastes
Follow 3 R’ s ( Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in your life. You can make a difference for the environment. It doesn’t matter how big or how old you are.
