Over the 100 years, the global population quadrupled. Have we ever thought where does all our domestic wastes, sewage wastes, agricultural wastes go? No we all are so busy that we don’t have the time to do so or we all are just ignorant to understand how much effect it can have on the environment around us.
Most of the garbage is dumped without any regulations and over the time this garbage can emit toxic chemicals which can enter the soil and water bodies. Now the food grown on this type of soil will not be fit for human consumption and can be hazardous. Also it will pose a threat for the aquatic life. People also burn the trash and use it as a way to dispose the wastes but it can lead to the production if toxins which can degrade the quality of air. It can even lead to the destruction of ozone layer therefore contributing to the global warming. The only way to prevent this is to effectively manage our wastes.
Waste management includes all the actions required to manage wastes from its production to its disposal.Sometimes waste can pose a threat to human health and also degrade the mother Earth. Hence management of wastes is very important. One of the methods of managing waste at an individual level is by using the products which are recyclable. Recycling helps us to conserve our natural resources and raw materials which can help us to boost our economy. It also reduces the total energy usage across the planet.Further, it can play a vital role in environment protection by reducing greenhouse gas emission and thus helping to tackle climate change. One of the best examples is using recycle paper and by minimizing the use of plastic bags. It can be difficult to
manage plastic waste as it is not recyclable. This is one if the main reasons why the use of plastics should be banned. When plastic waste reaches the water bodies, it can suffocate the animals thus causing an immense damage to marine life . Instead of plastic bags, one can use recyclable paper bags which can inturn lead to better managenent if wastes. Every individual should take steps on his/ her own level because its our responsibility to do something for our mother Earth which has provided the humans everything they needed to survive. Recycling can help to improve the lives and habitats of people as well as wildlife and thus it is our responsibility to make it an important part of our daily lives .
Waste can also be used to produce energy. This can be achieved by conversion of some non recyclabe products into heat, electricity or fuel by a variety of processes. This is a very clean method of managing wastes however it is a bit expensive because it requires capital.
Landfilling is another widely used method used for waste disposal. However it can lead to the contamination of environment by carrying the toxic materials from our wastes to the soil and even water supplies. So we should plan a proper design with the help of engineers so that we can reduce this contamination as much as possible. We can try composting our food waste or garden waste instead of dumping it. This process recycles various organic materials which are otherwise waste products and futher it is an eco- friendly method of waste management.
Managing wastes needs caution and proper care. If every household can make an effort to manage household waste, we can put an end to piling of garbage in corners of our streets and water bodies which can save the life of innocent creatures in these water bodies. Waste is produced by humans so it is our very own responsibility to take necessary steps for its management so that it doesn’t have an adverse effect on our environment.
