Waste to energy (WTE) or energy from waste. it is a process of generating energy in a form of electricity/heat from the primary treatment of waste.
It is a process of waste into fuel source.
In this essay we are going to see. about WTE, why we are producing more waste?, What are the impact of producing more waste?, And what is the solution for it?.
BACKGROUND OF PROBLEM
We all know that we are producing more waste, because population is growing, there is increase in packaged goods and lack of recycling efforts. In this modern world, we are spending much more time on entertainment, work and study then recycling. Because we think it is not necessary moreover, the main reason is that people are not aware of effect of waste on environment and they also don’t know about the waste is cause of air, soil and water pollution and it brings illness.
Many of the waste is not the cause of pollution. But there are some toxic waste, which makes a bad impact on environment which can also lead to greenhouse effect.
SOLUTION FOR PROBLEM
We can stop this, but the main question is that how we are going to stop this?. The answer is WTE this is the only way. Because we can’t stop producing waste, and the another way recycling but our peoples and government or not so much interested in recycling. So according to me waste to energy is the best way.
The most common technology for waste to energy conservation is incineration, and we all know that incineration producers air pollution. yes, but it is less than the coal plant. but now it is safe and less harmful to environment, and one more thing we want to see that technology which is using in Europe waste to energy plant is safe.
WTE PLANT IN INDIA
In India there are 92 plants with aggregate capacity of around 250 MW have been set up in the country for electricity generation from urban, agricultural and industrial waste.
And 6 plant in this comes under the swachh Bharat mission with a capacity of 74 MW.
PROCESS OF INCINERATION
The incineration process of MSW is separated into three main parts: combustion, energy recovery and pollution control. The crane in the machine is used to feed solid waste into the furnace of mission continually for combustion. The combustion of the waste in furnace is an enhance by following the three T’s guideline, which are temperature, turbulence and time. High temperature increases burn out of the waste while increasing turbulence reveals more waste surface and also increase burnout. A longer resident time for the fuel gas and the waste also increases burnout. The temperature for incineration should be at least 850 Celsius with a residence time of 2 minutes. Air supply must be sufficient during the process of ensure complete combustion of waste and to inhibit the formation of carbon monoxide and dioxins.
For the energy recovery process of the system, heat is generated from the waste and it is used to produce steam in the boiler. The steam is then used to drive the turbine to generate electricity.
Air pollution cause a major problem for old incinerators in the 20th century. However, modern incinerators are equipped with advanced pollution control system which are designed to reduce pollution and ensure that the system is in compliance with environmental standards. to neutralize acidic gases such as nitrogen chloride and sulphur oxides fine atomizes slurry or lime powder is spray into the hot exhaust gas using a dry/wet scrubber. Also in the system and activated carbon column is used to adsorb the heavy metals and organic pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyls and volatile organic compounds in the exhaust gas. The bag filter install in the system acts to filter and remove dust particles and fine particulates from the combustion.
BENEFITS OF WTE
Waste to energy facilities provide is safe, technologically advanced means of waste disposal that reduces greenhouse gases, generate clean energy and recycles metal.
Waste to energy is widely recognised as a technology that can help mitigate climate change. This is because the waste combusted at a WTE facility doesn’t generate methane, as it would at a landfill; the metal that would have been sent to the landfill are recovered for recycling instead of being thrown out; and electricity generated offsets the greenhouse gases that would otherwise have been generated from the coal and the natural gas plants. WTE facilities are the only form of energy generation that actually reduce green house gases.
Additionally, the energy produced at waste to energy facilities Is reliable base load power, meaning that is generated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. That provides the opportunity to not only sell electricity onto the grid, but also provides steam deliver to houses, public building and industry.
Finally, in my point of view WTE is best. Although not only taking waste we are producing energy which is very useful to us.
if our government took some more measures or actions on this waste to energy plants it would be very useful to our country and we can save our environment also.
