Brief information about the title of my essay:WOW is nothing but a recycling initiative that works towards spreading awareness about recycling and encouraging people to segregate and dispose their household and other wastes responsibly. This program was actually started by ITC(Indian Business Conglomerate)in 2007.
WOW=WEALTH OUT of WASTE: A project that aims to inculcate the habitat of recycling among school children, employees, housewives and general people. It was started in a small way, but has spread its wings now.
INTRODUCTION:Plastic is everywhere. Look around and you will notice that plastic is most common litter. Tangled in trees and fences along roads, floating in water,lying on ground in parks and forests, surrounding garbage bins,washed off on beaches. It has become most important for human life, because of their wide applications and advantages.
Plastics are used to manufacture an incredible number of products we use every day, such as food and beverage containers, trash and grocery bags, cups,children’s toys and diapers and bottles for everything from mouthwash and shampoo to glass cleaner and laundry detergent. At that’s not even counting all plastic that goes into furniture , appliances, computers and automobiles.
Advantages of plastic:
Plastic is lightweight and consumes less energy for production than that of textile. Its waste can be used in construction of better roads. Its waste can also be used in diesel manufacture. It generates less greenhouse gases than paper. Its bags are stronger than paper/textile bags. These are water resistant and are adhesive. Its production is solid, good and low cost. Plastic carrier bags can be reused as trash bags/bin bags.
Plastic being having many advantages they do have some disadvantages too. But because they are so lightweight plastic bags get easily picked up by wind and travel long distances by wind and water to pollute nature in many ways. Some of them are as given below:
DISADVANTAGES OF PLASTIC:
Plastic affecting water/water pollution by plastic;
Plastic pollutes water when dumped into water bodies. Plastic does not dissolve in water and disturbs its purity. Aquatic animals are also harmed by consumption of such polluted water.
Plastic affecting soil/soil pollution by plastic;
The soil gets damaged as plastic waste dumped into landfills. Plastic also ruins fertility of the soil in turn decreasing the production. Plastic can change the soil chemistry.
Other disadvantages of plastic;
Plastic bags are made of a non-renewable resource. They are hazard to wildlife animals, if not disposed properly. Plastic bags clog the roadside drains,which could even cause the flood at heavy rainfall.
Generation of less plastic waste, reuse of consumables,recycling of plastic waste and recover of valuable resources from waste are considered as good practices. They help conserve valuable natural resources and, energy and also lower environmental damage caused by socio economic development. Most of households of urban area are not using dustbin or not getting proper facilities to put their domestic garbage and therefore they throw on roads and way.
Process of using waste materials into new products to prevent usage of useful materials ,reduces the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce usage of energy, reduces mainly land pollution by reducing the need for conventional waste disposal. Recycling the component of reducing modern waste and is also the component of 5R concepts that are “REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, REFUSE and RECOVER “.
Reasons behind pollution caused by plastic waste:
Increase in population means that there are more people to create waste. Wealth is being increased means people are buying more products and creating more waste. Change in lifestyle, such as fast foods create additional waste (may be non biodegradable waste). Developing of new technological products and new packaging are being created, among which most of them are non biodegradable. Plastics such as soap cartoons,juice containers, wallpapers,wax papers ,chocolate/candy wrappers cannot be recycled so we must reduce the use of such plastics.
Reasons why plastic bags should be banned:
It is the main cause for environmental pollution. It is produced by the use of fossil fuels. It causes problem on degradation. It kills wildlife on their consumption. It also harms to human health (due to consumption of food present in them). It is not easy to recycle. It also costs high for clean-up. It comes with external costs. Better alternatives are also available in the place of plastics.
Majority of plastic bags are made of polyethylene, a substance that is derived from crude oil refining and natural gas processing. Both of which are non-renewable fossil fuel-based resources and through their extraction and production, they emit greenhouse gases, which contribute to global climate change.
Recycling of plastic may help us in many ways like;
Its helps to reduce energy usage. It reduces the consumption of fresh raw materials. It reduces water pollution and air pollution (caused by landfilling). Reduces greenhouse gases emissions. It helps waste management by saving available space in landfills. Recycling plastic bottles assists to conserve natural resources and oils.
Measure to reduce plastics:
Give up plastic bags. Take your own reusable ones to store. Skip straws. Unless you have medical needs and even then, you could use paper ones. Pass up plastic bottles. Invest in a refillable water bottle. Avoid plastic packaging. Buy bar soap instead of liquid. Recycle what you can. Don’t litter plastics.
CONCLUSION: Much is being done to control, monitor and rectify damage done by pollutants. For the sake of animals and specially for the Earth its an important duty of humans to limit the use of plastics. Plastic may have both advantages and disadvantages., but it should be used in limited way. The problems are diverse and some are only being recognised but it is important to keep a close control over pollutants so that we can maintain the environment in an acceptable condition for future generations.
